Palm Zire 71 SD/SDIO Update

This update is a compilation of expansion related driver fixes for the Zire 71, including the Palm Zire 71 Expansion Update. This update includes the following fixes for these issues:

  • Some 128MB SD cards fail to read after repeated use.
  • Some 64MB Memory cards fails to write.
  • Problems using some newer Margi Presenter-to-Go cards including card not recognized, device hang or blank screen on card insertion/removal.

Important: This update is ONLY for Zire 71 handhelds and should not be installed on a non-Zire 71 handheld.

System Requirements
  • Palm Zire 71 handheld
  • PC running Windows 98/NT 4.0/2000/Me/XP

    • Or
  • Mac OS X (version 10.1.2 or higher

    • Or
  • Mac OS 9 (version 9.1 and higher)


Installation Note
If you have previously installed the Palm Zire 71 SD/SDIO Update, it must be removed from your handheld before continuing with the installation. You need to back up your device by performing a HotSync operation, then perform a hard reset on your Zire 71 handheld, before you proceed with installing the Palm Zire 71 SDIO Update.


Uninstallation
Since this update replaces a system file, it cannot be removed using the "App/Delete" menu on the handheld. If you need to remove this file in the future, you will need to:
  1. Save your current data by performing a HotSync operation.
  2. Perform a hard reset.
  3. Remove mmc.prc from the backup folder (ex. In Windows - C:\palm\username\backup or C:\Programs File\palm\username\backup)
  4. Perform another HotSync operation.


Locating the backup folder in the Mac (OS 9 and X):
  1. Close Palm Desktop.
  2. Locate your Palm User folder in the following location:
    • OS 9 (Palm Desktop 4.0):

      • Hard Drive > Documents > Palm > Users
    • OS X:

      • Hard Drive > Users > Your Mac OS Login Name > Documents > Palm > Users
  3. In the Palm Users folder, locate your user name folder, It should appear just as it does within Palm Desktop
  4. Locate the Backup folder.


Installation Instructions for Windows Users
  1. Download Zire71SDPatch2.zip (19KB ZIP File for Windows Users)
  2. Extract the file using a standard unzip utility. Note the location of the directory/folder the file is extracted to.
  3. Launch Palm Desktop. Select the Install Tool/Quick Install icon.
  4. Select the correct user name from the User list.
  5. Select the Add button.
  6. Locate the .prc file in the directory/folder noted in Step 1 above and double-click on it.
  7. Select Done.
  8. Select OK.
  9. During the next HotSync synchronization, the Palm Zire 71 SDIO Update will be installed and activated.


Installation Instructions for Mac Users
  1. Download Zire71SDPatch2.sit (19KB SIT File for Macintosh Users)
  2. Your web browser should decode the file and you will see the appropriate .sit file appear on the desktop (or in your default download folder). If your web browser does not decode the file automatically, you will need to use a decoding utility (such as Aladdin Stuffit Expander) in order to decode the .sit file.
  3. Find the Instant Palm Desktop icon in the top right corner of your screen. From the Instant Palm Desktop menu, launch the HotSync Manager.
  4. From the HotSync menu of the Instant Palm Desktop, select "Install" and pick the correct user name from the User list.
  5. Select Add to List. Locate the .prc file and double-click on it.
  6. Quit HotSync Manager. The file will be installed during your next HotSync operation.
