Download & Install Treo 650 Updater 1.12 (alternate instructions for Sprint PCS)

If you are not a Sprint PCS customer, do not download this version of the software. It contains carrier-specific requirements that are incompatible with non-Sprint phones. Not a Sprint PCS customer? Click here for the appropriate Treo 650 Updater.
What's special about this alternate method?
The Treo 650 Updater requires 11MB of free memory on your smartphone in order to be installed. If your smartphone is nearly full, you may not be able to delete enough applications and data to make room for the updater. Instead, we'll show you how to back up your smartphone, erase everything in memory, install the updater under a new user name, and restore your data under the old user name.
Note for third-party email users
- GoodLink: Click here for instructions to back up your GoodLink applications and provisioning data before proceeding with the updater.
- Business Connection and others: Do you use a corporate wireless email client to link to your Microsoft Exchange (Outlook), Lotus Notes or other corporate email account? Most corporate email solutions have special back-up procedures to ensure the highest level of security. Please contact your wireless email vendor or IT helpdesk to get the appropriate back-up instructions for your email client before proceeding with the updater.
Installation: Windows
Before Installing
- Update your CD software: If you installed software from the Treo 650 CD, get the latest versions before you run the Treo 650 Updater. Your smartphone's new memory system after the update may not work with previous versions of third-party software.

- Perform a HotSync operation to back up your data. Make sure your conduits are set to "Synchronize the files" (how).
- Next, you'll be performing a hard reset. Remember:
- A hard reset will erase everything on your smartphone, so make sure your data is backed up before you do this.
- Also, you may need to re-enter third-party software registration codes when you restore your data later, so keep these handy or request them from the third-party software vendor before proceeding.
To perform a hard reset:
- Press the Battery Door Release button and slide the battery door downward to remove it from your Treo. Do not remove the battery.
- Take out the stylus and have it ready.
- Hold down the Power/End
button.
- While still holding the Power/End button, use the stylus to gently press the RESET hole on the back.
- You will see palmOne logo and a progress bar first, then a circular Palm Powered logo. Do not release the Power/End button until the second, circular Palm Powered logo appears.

- Do not turn on the phone features or connect to the Sprint PCS network at this point. Important: If the phone is on, press and hold Power/End

Then continue following the steps in the wizard, which will include a HotSync operation that transfers the updater to your smartphone. The update process will auto start immediately after the completion of HotSync. Please do not remove your power cable during the update process.
- After the update completes on your smartphone, the installation wizard will ask you to perform another HotSync operation to restore your data. When asked for your user name, select the old user name you were using before you changed it. The backed up personal data and applications will be restored to your smartphone during synchronization.
- If the update was successful, your smartphone's Software version number will be Treo650-1.12-SPCS (how to check).
- Now that you've updated your smartphone, some of the features and functions are different. Stay up-to-date with the latest documentation: Sprint PCS Treo 650 User Guide (3.5MB PDF).
- If you have paired Bluetooth wireless devices, you will need to re-pair those devices after installing the updater. The secure pairing files are not backed up or restored with synchronization. See your user guide for details.
Restore Data (optional)
Did you forget to select your old username when the wizard asked you to perform the final HotSync operation? Here's how to change back to your old user name and restore your data and applications. If your old data and applications were restored successfully, you're done; don't perform the steps below.
- Perform another hard reset (see above). This wipes out the temporary user name and temporary user data, but your smartphone will retain the update.

Download and Install
- Download: Treo_650_Updater_1_12.sit (8.2MB StuffIt Archive file)
- Your Mac's web browser should automatically expand the file into a folder named "Treo 650 Updater" which contains 35 Palm OS files. If your Mac's web browser does not expand the file automatically, you will need to use an expansion utility such as Allume StuffIt Expander to decompress the file. Note the folder location in which the decompressed files are saved.
- Double click one of the 35 Palm OS files that were decompressed. The Install Handheld Files window will open, with that file in the list. When asked, select the new user name you just created (such as "TempDelete").
- Select All files in the Treo 650 Update folder and drop them in the Install Handheld Files window.
- Perform a HotSync operation. The update process will auto start immediately after the completion of HotSync. Please do not remove your power cable during the update process.
- If the update was successful, your smartphone's Software version number will be Treo650-1.12-SPCS (how to check).
Restore Data

- Perform a HotSync operation. Important: When asked for your user name, select the old user name you were using before you changed it. The backed up personal data and applications will be restored to your smartphone during synchronization.
- Now you can delete the temporary user name you created above. Never sync to the new user name after performing the update, or the updater will be re-installed on your device and it will loop through the update whenever you sync. To delete the temporary user name:
- On your Mac, launch Palm Desktop.
- From the HotSync menu, select User, then Edit Users.
- Click on the new user name you created above (such as "TempDelete").
- Click on Delete. When asked to confirm, select Delete.
