• Business Connection and others: Do you use a corporate wireless email client to link to your Microsoft Exchange (Outlook), Lotus Notes or other corporate email account? Most corporate email solutions have special back-up procedures to ensure the highest level of security. Please contact your wireless email vendor or IT helpdesk to get the appropriate back-up instructions for your email client before proceeding with the updater.

Before Installing

1. GoodLink users: follow the instructions on this page instead of below. If you don't use GoodLink, proceed with the steps below.
2. Update your CD software: If you installed software from the Treo 650 CD, get the latest versions before you run the Treo 650 Updater. Your smartphone's new memory system after the update may not work with previous versions of third-party software.

3. Disable or delete conflicting software: Some applications interfere with the updater. Click here for a list of software, and instructions for avoiding conflicts.
4. Press and hold Power/End to turn off the phone features and disconnect from the Sprint PCS network.
5. Perform a soft reset. Important: do not skip this step. Do not perform a hard reset.
6. Find your device's user name.
7. During the installation process, make sure your Treo 650's battery is fully charged and that your smartphone is connected to both a power supply and your PC.
8. Make sure you have at least 11MB/11,000KB free memory on your device.

9. Change all conduits to 'Synchronize the files' (how). This ensures a current backup of data normally backed up during a HotSync operation.

Download and Install

10. Download: Treo_650_Updater_1_12.zip (9.6MB ZIP file)
11. Unzip the file you downloaded.
12. Double-click the file you unzipped: Treo_650_Updater_1_12.exe
13. Follow all instructions in the installation wizard that will appear. This includes a HotSync operation that will back up your personal information and transfer the Treo 650 Updater to your handheld.
14. If the update was successful, your smartphone's Software version number will be Treo650-1.XX-SPCS (how to check).

After the Update

• Get the new Treo 650 User Guide: Now that you've updated your smartphone, some of the features and functions are different. Stay up-to-date with the latest documentation: Sprint PCS Treo 650 User Guide (3.5MB PDF).
• Is your smartphone looping? Did you see the error "Not enough memory to complete operation"? Either of these will happen if you didn't clear 11MB free memory on your smartphone before attempting to install the upgrade. Use this method for installing the update instead.
• Are your Bluetooth trusted pairs missing? If you have paired Bluetooth wireless devices, you will need to re-pair those devices after installing the updater. The secure pairing files are not backed up or restored with synchronization. See your user guide for details.
• Install the Treo E911 Firmware Update: After you've successfully installed the Treo 650 Update, add the latest E911 Firmware Update to your smartphone. Get the E911 Firmware Update now.

Download and Install

10. Download: Treo_650_Updater_1_12.sit (8.3MB StuffIt Archive file)
11. Your Mac's web browser should automatically expand the file into a folder named "Treo 650 Updater" which contains 35 Palm OS files. If your Mac's web browser does not expand the file automatically, you will need to use an expansion utility such as Allume StuffIt Expander to decompress the file. Note the folder location in which the decompressed files are saved.
12. Double click one of the 35 Palm OS files that were decompressed. The Install Handheld Files window will open, with that file in the list. If asked, select your Treo 650's user name from the list.
13. Select All files in the Treo 650 Update folder and drop them in the Install Handheld Files window.
14. Perform a HotSync operation. The update process will auto start immediately after the completion of HotSync. Please do not remove your power cable during the update process.
15. Important: You must do these steps, or the updater will be re-installed on your device every time you perform a HotSync operation:
    1. On your Mac, locate your Backup folder, which is inside your user folder.
    2. Delete the following 35 files from your Backup folder:

16. Perform another HotSync operation to restore your data to your Treo 650 smartphone.
